Costa Rica, though small in size, boasts incredible contrasts and diversity. You can start your day sipping freshly brewed coffee on the Caribbean coast, surrounded by rainforest, and end it on the Pacific coast, cocktail in hand as you watch the sunset. What connects these two coasts is Costa Rica’s backbone—volcanic mountain ranges that form the exceptional Continental Divide.
Nestled high within these mountains is Monteverde, enveloped in cloud forests and mist. Just a turn off the Pan-American Highway leads you on an ascent to this enchanting place in the clouds.
Monteverde enchants visitors with its vibrant spirit, commitment to nature conservation, and a community of artists and peace-lovers. Ficus Sunset Suites serves as the perfect base camp for exploring the wonders of Monteverde, including its mystical cloud forest and adventure hotspots like Selvatura Adventure Park!
Understanding Monteverde's Climate
Located about 10° north of the Tropics, Costa Rica enjoys warm and consistent temperatures year-round. However, the country is home to numerous microclimates influenced by elevation, rainfall, topography, and geography. Monteverde is a prime example of such a unique microclimate.
Costa Rica has two distinct seasons: the Dry or Golden Season from early December to mid-May, and the Wet or Green Season from mid-May to late November. Note that the Caribbean coast experiences higher rainfall year-round, enjoying its Golden Season in September and October.
Monteverde, sitting at approximately 4,662 feet (1,444 m) above sea level, straddles the Continental Divide, creating ideal conditions for the clouds that envelop its mountaintop forests. Moisture-laden winds rise up the mountains, forming clouds that bring the rain essential to the cloud forest’s ecosystem.
While the driest months (January to April) offer warmth and sun, light rains can occur, enhancing the lush landscape. When the summer rains subside, stunning rainbows often grace the skies over Monteverde, providing breathtaking views.
The wettest months, September and October, present challenges for wildlife spotting as animals seek cover. Trails may become muddier, but the cloud forest remains stunning, rain or shine.
Birdwatching Paradise
Monteverde ranks as one of Costa Rica’s premier birdwatching destinations, hosting hundreds of resident and migratory bird species. The elusive resplendent quetzal, azure-hooded jays, orange-bellied trogons, three-wattled bellbirds, and vibrant hummingbirds can all be spotted here.
March and April mark the peak season for viewing resplendent quetzals as they court and nest. Bird lovers should look for these stunning birds around wild avocado trees and listen for the bellbirds’ calls.
With over 450 bird species identified by enthusiastic visitors, Monteverde transforms even the most casual observer into an avid birdwatcher, especially during the courtship and nesting season.

In Costa Rica, the peak tourist season typically coincides with the Golden Season. Be prepared to encounter more visitors exploring the trails, zipping through the canopy, and enjoying the charms of Monteverde and nearby Santa Elena.
